Unauthorized writing by amateur fans, featuring the same world and characters of the original work. Not limited to film or television (i.e. the term covers novels, anime, and even video games), but began with Star Trek in the 1960s and was dominated by female writers. Now the split is ~50-50. Also called fan fic, fanfic, fic or ff.
